After doing a lot of research on the internet I found a video on how to make a push and pull card. This would allow my two compartments to slide in and out of the CD case together, at the same time.
It is made up of 4 different pieces, 2 square, 1 H shape and a strip of thin plastic. The plastic strip is wrapped around the inner section of the 'H' shape with enough room for movement and the two ends of the plastic are glued together. The square pieces are then glued onto the plastic strip, one on each side of the H shape. This means that when one square is pulled, the plastic strip will be pulled with it making it slide around the middle of the H shape and the other square will be moved along with it making it slide out the other side.
This push and pull card will be placed inside the other CD case piece so the mechanism is hidden.
